Proposals can be submitted independently by students, in which case (and if feasible) they will be discussed and developed with relevant staff. However, staff will usually also have a range of graduate research projects that fit directly with their ongoing research programmes, for which specific funding may be sought. In many cases, staff may be interested in working with you in your general area of interest, but may not feel that your specific research proposal offers great scope for further development. In this case we may negotiate a revised project that fits more closely with the current activity and research programmes of the department. This is our preferred method of receiving applications, as it initiates a process whereby potential supervisors can comment on your proposal and the Department´s Director of Graduate Research can evaluate the appropriateness of your qualifications and experience, and the availability of staff to supervise your topic. When you submit your application, please give special attention to Section J, as we like to you to provide us with a particular range of information. What Happens Next? Once we have received this information, we will usually be able to make a decision in 3-4 weeks. Please bear in mind that assessing a research proposal raises a number of complex considerations, and we will be unable to respond quickly or make a decision based on insufficient information. [ECOLOG-L] PHD position (carbon cycling) – Melbourne, Australia

PhD scholarship – Carbon cycling of revegetated agricultural landscapes under a dry climate

Monash University, AU$ 26,669 p.a., 3 years full-time

South-eastern Australia is predicted to be substantially drier in the coming decades, potentially driving extensive land-use change in agricultural landscapes. As traditional agricultural practices become less viable, growing trees for carbon storage, water quality and biodiversity benefits will become increasingly common. An opportunity exists at the Australian Centre for Biodiversity, Monash University for a PhD candidate to undertake novel interdisciplinary studies on specific aspects of these complex biological systems.

The project investigates how revegetation and a dry climate will affect carbon cycling through a novel combination of field surveys, long-term flux observations, /in situ/ manipulations, controlled environment experiments and laboratory analyses. The PhD is part of a broader Australian Research Council-funded Linkage project to understand how extensive revegetation will affect carbon storage, water yields and biodiversity of catchments (www.biolsci. monash.edu. au/research/ acb/carbon) . It brings together a research team with expertise in micrometeorology, forest ecology, soil processes, terrestrial ecology, landscape modelling, freshwater ecology and landscape economics.

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic student with a strong interest in ecosystem ecology, particularly the role of soils, and experience in agricultural science, plant ecology/physiology, micrometeorology, chemistry or similar area. Experience with fieldwork, chemical analyses and /or modelling would be an advantage.

This is an excellent opportunity to establish a career in the interdisciplinary area of global change science. Potential areas of research for the PhD candidate include carbon cycling (stocks and flows) within and among the soil, vegetation and atmosphere; soil microbes and respiration; and, exchanges of non-CO_2 greenhouse gases.

The project could involve exploring different measurement techniques and modelling approaches. The full-time position will start in mid-late 2010 and be based at Monash University with fieldwork in the Goulburn-Broken Catchment, Victoria.

A first class honours (or equivalent, e.g. research Masters) undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline is required. This scholarship is open to both Australian and overseas applicants. PhD-researcher “Land Governance for Equitable and Sustainable Development’ (F/M)

Job description

In 2010 a new IS-academy on ‘land governance’ will be launched entitled: ‘Land Governance for Equitable and Sustainable Development’. This IS-academy will generate, analyse, synthesize and disseminate knowledge on how land governance can contribute to equitable and sustainable development in line with the Millennium Development Goals. The guiding question is how to optimize the link between land governance, sustainable development and poverty alleviation.

This IS-academy will operate as a partnership between International Development Studies (UU, leading partner), Agriterra, African Studies Center ( Leiden ), Disaster Studies ( Wageningen University ), HIVOS, KIT, Triodos Facet and DDE (the Ministry of Foreign Affairs).

In the framework of this IS-academy, we will initiate two PhD projects related to the following themes:

1.Conflict-induced displacement and return, with specific attention to land governance. This project should contribute to a better understanding of the dynamics of land disputes related to displacement, return and resettlement in the wake of violent conflict as well as the governance challenges involved (related to the changing legitimacy and capacity of local state or customary institutions, legal pluralism, and decentralization, amongst others). It should contribute ideas on how to improve land governance in these contexts, taking into account issues of gender and generations. Region: preferably Sub-Saharan Africa or Latin America (comparative approach)

Supervision: International Development Studies ( Utrecht University ) in collaboration with Disaster Studies ( Wageningen University )

2. Hotspots for large scale land acquisitions: how to optimize the opportunities for local development. This research should preferably focus on a number of hotspots for large-scale land acquisition, while analysing the local responses (also by local government) and the consequences for equitable and sustainable development at various levels. This project should contribute to recommendations on how to deal with large-scale land acquisitions so as to produce positive change for society. Region: preferably Sub-Saharan Africa (comparative approach).

Supervision: International Development Studies ( Utrecht University ) in collaboration with the African Studies Centre ( Leiden )

Qualifications

Candidates should meet the following criteria:

-MA/MSc in Social Sciences with a development orientation (Geography, Anthropology, Development Economics, Development Studies, Conflict Studies, Political Sciences);

-experience in doing field research (preferably Sub-Saharan Africa) in related topics;

-interest to work in close collaboration with the indicated partner organizations of the IS academy and willing to contribute to policy debates.

Terms of employment

We offer two PhD positions (1 0f each) with an initial 12 month contract. After a positive evaluation this contract will be extended to a maximum of 36 more months (a total of four years maximum) and with the specific intent that it will result in a doctorate within this period.

The salary for a full time appointment starts at € 2,042 and increases to € 2,612 gross per month in the fourth year of the appointment.

The salary will be supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year. In addition we offer a pension scheme and flexible employment conditions. Conditions are based on the Collective Employment Agreement of the Dutch Universities.
